I’m always looking for perspective.
Whether it is the ability to see the world from someone else’s viewpoint or not judging how someone handles a situation,
it is, for me, a constant reminder to be looking for how God is at work in life.
So let me offer you this perspective. What if salvation is not an event?
What if it isn’t a moment in time in a church or just validation of an experience? I’m not saying many of
us haven’t had experiences, but what if being a child of God is more than an experience? What if it is a relationship?
I did not choose to be a son to my mother
and father. They chose to have me, to raise me and to love me. The Bible teaches us that God is our divine father.
He chose us; we did not choose him. We love him only because he has first loved us. I’m not here to give
you a list of things to check off so that when you are done, your life as a Christian will be sealed and all will be well.
For some, God’s call was to die for the faith. He may ask the same of me or you.
To be a Christian is to be in a relationship. We become Disciples of Jesus
Christ, followers of Christ, as he calls us to take up our cross and follow Him. Just like being a child of my earthly
parents, that relationship has grown and changed over my life. We too, as children of God, are growing and learning.
Sometimes we are confident and other times we are fearful. Life with Christ is amazing. Seeing those moments in
our life when it was a “God thing” is unforgettable. The Bible is our primary authority in all matters of
faith and practice, but God speaks to us in our particular situations in so many ways. Listening for God in the voice
of a stranger, a note from a friend or a street sign along my daily path is an activity that keeps me constantly aware of
God’s presence.
